Autism in Sicily/Autismo in Sicilia

My autistic son Umberto when he was a little boy
Originally I'd felt it was too early to share with you my "Dream" for a way to improve the lives of Sicilians living in autism, but since writing the "About" page, I've changed my mind. It made no sense to talk about inclusion and embracing differences there, while keeping secrets here.

There is a small island, not far off the western-most tip of Sicily. It's called Favignana. It's a magical place, infused with an extraordinarily healing energy. Life there is gentle, natural, slow and healthy. It lacks much of the stress and noxious stimuli so prevalent in modern life. Life is good, in the true sense of the word.
Historically, there has long been a prison on the island, and when I asked a member of the local Carabinieri, Isn't it outdated to run an island prison? Shouldn't it be closed down? he told me that closing it wasn't likely, as many families on Favignana depend on the prison for their livelihood. So, I let it drop.
Then I received a call from a friend. She had returned to her native Sicily to have a baby, and once her maternity leave was over, she had been offered a position in a middle school in a severely deprived quarter of a large Sicilian city. Being Sicilian herself, she was already aware of the realities of cultural, social and material poverty, but she was absolutely appalled by the conditions she witnessed in this urban wasteland. There was an utter lack of anything at all which could inspire the children (or their parents or grandparents for that matter) to strive for anything better in their lives than a future of prostitution or drug dealing - in other words, a future as mafia minions.
I was shocked for her, finding herself tossed into such a work environment, and saddened and frustrated too, for the people born directly into these conditions. But my thoughts soon turned to the autistic members of communities such as this. I happened to be on Favignana at the time, enjoying a short break with Filippo, Camilla and Umberto before school recommenced, and I kept thinking, "But they really need this too. They should be treated to the respite that this beautiful place offers - but they won't even have heard of it; how could they come? no-one will ever bring them".
And then it seemed clear to me. Of course - the prison!!
And, this is a brief, very rudimentary outline of "My Dream".
How about if the "prison" was slowly phased out, and the structure converted to accommodate autistic residents. The residents would be carefully selected for their compatibility with one another and though they would probably require supervision in their everyday lives, they would be able to integrate socially on the island and thus benefit from the rare soothing qualities it provides. It could still be state-run, guaranteeing the same number of job opportunities for the islanders as the prison does today - maybe even more. The residents could easily be partly self-supporting; and could also be socially occupied in helping to care for the nature on their island home. This new community would be an asset to the island. And by no means least, Sicily would grab the World's precious attention for its success in promoting this exemplary project.
There are people who believe, "If I can imagine it, then it's possible", and it doesn't take much imagining to know that this "Dream" is very possible. The only obstacles are beaurocracy (Italy has a lot of that), and an aversion for change - neither of which need be real, solid, obstacles.
I am realistic enough to know that the time might not be right  to realize this dream in the foreseeable future; but I do think that even the simple act of writing about it here - of "putting it out there" - will bring benefits to people living in autism, and to the people who love and care for them. At the very least it will help expose autism to those who are still unfamiliar with it.
Thank you for reading this. Please let me know what you think. Am I right to dream? Sx

Sally

  2. Wow!
All dreams should be chased and a centre of excellence in Sicily for autistic children would be fabulous. The only problem is creating change in Italy, as you said beaurocracy in Italy is a nightmare.
    But change is possible

  3. Hiya PN,
Wouldn't it be great if Sicily took an opportunity like this to show what it's capable of? Forward thinking, fresh ideas for the greater good. I sometimes get the feeling that Sicilians have forgotten how exceptional they are!
